I recently purchased two yards of cotton fabric and created my own apron.
The apron was simple to make and is sure to get lots of use during the upcoming holiday season! You can make your own apron in one afternoon by following the directions below.
Supplies:
1 yard primary fabric
1 yard secondary fabric for liner and straps
matching thread
pattern (see my simple DIY pattern below)
pins
scissors
needle
sewing machine
iron
A simple pattern can be created easily with a large pad of paper, a tape measure, and a pencil. Using your own body measurements, draw one half of the apron body (to be pinned to the fold of the fabric to ensure symmetrical sides after the fabric is cut). The simple pattern that I created is straight across the top with a half "U" shape cut out under the arm and straight sides. The pattern also includes long rectangles for the ties and neck strap. When creating a pattern based on your own body measurements, don't forget to include an extra 5/8 inch for seam allowances.
Once you've created a pattern, cut it out...
...and pin it to the fabric.
Cut the apron body twice, once from the primary fabric and once from the secondary fabric. Cut two ties and one neck strap from the secondary fabric.
Fold the two ties and neck strap in half lengthwise and pin with right sides together.
Stitch the ties and neck strap along each end and down the side, leaving a one inch opening.
Trim the excess fabric from the seams.
Turn the ties and neck strap right side out by pulling fabric through the seam opening.
Once ties and neck strap are turned around, hand stitch seam openings shut and press.
Pin ties to the edge of the right side of the apron front. Leave room for the seam allowances when pinning ties. Baste stitch ties to apron.
Pin the neck strap to the top right side of the apron, leaving room for seam allowances. Baste stitch.
Pin secondary fabric apron cut out to primary fabric apron with right sides together. Ensure that the ties and neck strap are safely away from edges. Stitch, leaving a three inch opening. Trim excess fabric from seams. Turn apron right side out by pulling fabric through opening. Press.
Hand stitch the seam opening and press.
