Shark Fin Pie

I'm a huge fan of Shark Week, and I love to celebrate the annual television extravaganza by making a shark-themed treat.  This year I opted for a lemon meringue pie with a terrifying twist!

Bake a lemon meringue pie [recipe here] as usual, but add blue food coloring to the meringue at the last minute, just before you finish whipping it.  Top the pie with the meringue and use the back of a spoon to create ocean-like waves.  Bake according to directions.

While the pie is baking, make the shark fins.  You will need scissors, a plastic bag, waxed paper, white paper, a pencil, a toothpick, and white melting chocolate.  Draw a shark fin with an extended bottom (so that you can stick it securely into the pie) on the white paper and place underneath the waxed paper.

Melt the white melting chocolate in the microwave.

Place the melted white chocolate into the plastic bag and trim a small section of the corner of the bag.

Pipe the melted white chocolate onto the waxed paper inside the lines of the shark fin design.

Use the toothpick to fill in the design.

Move the white paper to another section of the waxed paper and repeat the steps to make additional shark fins.  Allow the white chocolate to harden completely.

Once the pie is completely cool and the white chocolate shark fins are fully hardened, insert the shark fins into the meringue topping and enjoy!

[Shark Week beings Sunday, August 12 on Discovery Channel.]

P.S. Check out what I made last year to celebrate Shark Week!
